Gigabyte Announces Gaming Laptop

Gigabyte is a well-known brand in PC hardware, but so far it has mainly been motherboards, desktop graphics cards and things of that nature. Now the company is obviously planning to expand its portfolio by launching full-featured laptops, including both ultrabooks and a gaming machine.

The gaming laptop has been given the catchy name “P2542G” and was just unveiled at CeBIT in Hanover. It’s a 15.6-inch model equipped with an Ivy Bridge (3rd-generation) Core i7 quad-core processor and an (also new) Nvidia GTX 660M–a likely successor to the ubiquitous GTX 560M that currently resides in laptops like the Asus G53SX, Toshiba’s Qosmio lineup and many others. Nvidia’s GTX 660M should be one of the upcoming 28nm parts, codenamed Kepler, and thus both faster and more power-efficient than its predecessor.

Both Kepler and Intel’s Ivy Bridge are on track for a spring launch. In spite of some delay for Ivy Bridge,  that would be somewhere around late April. In other words, that should be the timeline for the P2542G as well, and Gigabyte tells Slashgear that we should expect a Q2 release date for the new gaming system. No details on pricing, unfortunately, but some of the other specs include a Full HD 1920 x 1080 display, Blu-ray drive and an optional SSD, so it’s hardly a budget laptop.
