For what is probably the first time ever, here’s your chance to get a shiny new 15.6-inch Alienware laptop for less than $1,000! Sure, it’s the base model, but it still comes with all the Alienware extras including the AlienFX backlighting and a custom, laser-etched nameplate.
Visit Dell and Build Yours! (expired). Have a look at the M14x instead.

The offer ends 4/25/2011. Included in the $999 base model of the M15x is a 2.4GHz Intel Core i3 370M, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB 7,200rpm hard drive, a 1600×900 WLED panel and a 1GB Mobility Radeon HD 5730. The processor can be upgraded up to a quad-core Core i7 Extreme Edition, the amount of RAM to 6GB or 8GB, the drive to a Samsung SSD or a 500GB HDD. You can also upgrade to a Full HD 1920×1080 panel, a 9-cell battery and a Blu-ray player.
The only thing that can not be upgraded as far as we could tell is the HD 5730 GPU. In this writer’s humble opinion, the most worthwhile upgrade is the minimum processor upgrade ($300) – a big step up from a dual-core Core i3 to a quad-core Core i7. The included 1600×900 panel should be fairly well suited to the GPU; the Mobility Radeon HD 5730 is a mid-range graphics card with 400 shaders and 650MHz/800MHz core/memory speeds, respectively. It is therefore capable of playing all the latest games, but in some demanding titles you may have to compromise between high detail settings and playable frame rates.
