I just opened up an email from Newegg saying that they are currently selling the ASUS Republic of Gamers G73SW in refurbished/recertified condition for $999, which sounded like a great deal worth publishing here, but when visiting the page the price is actually just $919.99! That’s not bad at all for a Sandy Bridge-based gaming laptop of this caliber. The only catch is that it expires 8/22, so the supply is likely limited.

This laptop’s full model name is G73SW-BST6, which apparently means that it comes with a 2nd-generation (Sandy Bridge) Intel Core i7-2630QM–the quad core CPU that is standard issue with lots of current gaming laptops. It runs at 2GHz and overclocks to 2.9GHz with Turbo Boost. The graphics are handled by an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M, which runs all but the most demanding games at native resolution (in this case 1600 x 900) and high detail settings. It has 8GB of DDR3 RAM installed and a 750GB 7200rpm hard drive.
The fact that it’s refurbished/recertified reveals that it is not the latest model. That one is called G74SX and we recently published a comparison between the two. The short version is that the newer version has the same processor but a GTX 560M–a graphics card that is very similar to the GTX 460M but with higher clock speeds and optimizations that allows it to consume no more power than its predecessor. Another cutback made in this particular model is the 1600 x 900 screen instead of 1920 x 1080.
Nevertheless, the difference in pricing is huge in this case and if you don’t mind picking up a refurbished laptop this is an amazing, if short-lived deal.
