On the topic of flying pigs, another television and LCD manufacturer has decided that the time is right to cash in on the popularity of gaming laptops. Hot on the heels of Samsung’s somewhat surprising announcement of a Series 7 gaming machine with quite impressive specs, their main rival (in the television industry) LG has decided to get on the bandwagon with a 15-inch 3D laptop powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M–the same GPU as the one used by Dell in the XPS 17 3D and the Alienware M14x. The GT 555M is considerably slower than Samsung’s counterpart, the high-end Radeon HD 6970M, but still a capable laptop GPU.
U.S. readers may be surprised to learn that LG has actually supplied branded laptops to the Canadian and European markets for quite some time, but for some reason or other the manufacturer has opted to keep its laptops outside U.S. borders. LG has been quite innovative in their designs, for example by producing a 13-inch gaming laptop a few years ago that also doubled as a frying pan according to some reviews.
The A530 has a decidedly more conservative design with average specs (for a gaming laptop) including up to 8GB of RAM, a choice of Core i-series CPUs and a 1920 x 1080 display that might be difficult to power at native resolution with a performance-hungry 3D Vision kit added to the mix. We assume it is using NVIDIA’s 3D Vision considering the choice of GPU and the fact that it requires glasses. This could of course be less of a problem for American customers since LG has apparently decided to keep its laptops out of the country. It’s difficult to imagine anyone leveraging their Canadian contacts to get a hold of this one just for the feature set, which is equaled or surpassed by several competitors.
