Lenovo Legion Y740-15
Meta-review: Critics love the Legion Y740-15 for its build quality and performance. The small laptop packs a lot of power even though the battery life is not great.
Lenovo Legion Y740-15 Prices
The Lenovo Legion Y740-15 is an update on the Y720 (and a more advanced version of the Y730). It’s a relatively compact laptop but not quite as slim as, for example, the 15-inch Blade or the Gigabyte Aero, but also not nearly as bulky as e.g. the MSI’s GT63 Titan. Like all high-end gaming laptops in 2019, the Y740-15 uses Nvidia RTX graphics cards – in this case, the Max-Q versions of the RTX 2070.
Legion Y740-15 Configurations
The Lenovo Legion Y740 comes with the Intel Core i7-8750H which has 6 cores. That is plenty for gaming as well as content creations. On the graphics side of things, you can choose between the Nvidia RTX 2060 or the RTX 2070 Max-Q. Both of these options are high-end GPUs in 2019 and only surpassed by the non-Max-Q RTX cards. The 15.6-inch FHD display has a resolution of 1080p, a 144Hz refresh rate and comes with G-Sync. The Legion Y740 allows you to turn G-Sync off if needed. This is something that is not possible on most other gaming laptops.
In any configuration, the Lenovo Legion Y740 15″ should be able to run any game as of 2019 at 60 FPS/1080p. Most games should be playable using Ultra preset but you might need to dial the settings down in the more intensive titles. To give you some examples, the Legion Y740-15 with the RTX 2060 can run the Witcher 3 at 60 FPS at 1080p using the Ultra settings. It can also run PUBG at 82 FPS, Apex Legends at 107 FPS and Overwatch at 126 FPS.
Here are some Time Spy benchmark numbers that are not specific to the Y740-15, but will put graphics performance in some perspective:
This should give you a general understanding of the kind of performance you can expect from the RTX 2060 variant of the computer. If you pay more for the RTX 2070 Max-Q, you will get some additional frames per second as well as improved real-time ray tracing support.
While the laptop has a low-key design, you can configure RGB lighting on the sides and on the logo. A Windows Precision trackpad is included and positioned at the center. Inside you can replace the HDD, SSD, and RAM. The WiFi card can also be replaced if need be. The webcam is located at the bottom which might not be ideal for people that still use one. You have a USB Type-C port and headphone jack on one side and a USB Type-A port on the other. There are plenty of ports at the back.
Here’s what the critics think about the laptop. It’s also part of our 2070 Max-Q roundup for 2019.
PCMag (RTX 2070)
With short battery life as the only real shortcoming, the 15-inch Lenovo Legion Y740 is a potent gaming laptop that, while not inexpensive, matches the performance and features of pricier machines.
LaptopMag (RTX 2070)
The Lenovo Legion Y740 (15-inch) offers strong performance and a gorgeous 144Hz display, but its battery life isn’t great.
