GeForce MX250: First Turing GPU for Laptops?

According to leaked product specifications detailing the upcoming HP Zhan 66 Pro laptop, Nvidia is preparing the launch an entry-level GPU by the name MX250, which might replace today’s MX150. 

For quite some time Nvidia has relied on the GeForce MX150 as an entry-level solution in primarily thin-and-light laptops (although it has been seen in gaming laptops as well for some reason).  Since the MX150 was released, Nvidia has also introduced more powerful GPUs for thin-and-lights in the form of their Max-Q design. However, the MX150 has been the Pascal-based staple in mainstream laptops for a couple of years now, so it is high time for a replacement.

That replacement may indeed by underway, according to a supposedly leaked image detailing the product specifications for an upcoming laptop known as Zhan 66 Pro 14 G2 from HP.

The product sheet mentions no detailed graphics card specifications, other than that it is equipped with 2 GB of GDDR5.  What we are very curious to find out is whether the MX250 is based on the Pascal graphics architecture or on Nvidia’s latest architecture Turing, also known as the RTX 2xxx series (RTX 2070/2080) in its high-end incarnations.

Both Nvidia and AMD are known to ‘rebadge’ old GPUs, i.e. slapping on a new name on an existing piece of silicon. However, claim that their sources confirmed for the website that the potentially matching Turing-based graphics processors TU107 and TU108 ‘have been found’. This could indicate that Nvidia is preparing to launch the mobile version of Turing soon, at least in the entry-level segment.

No launch date for further Turing-based GPUs has been unveiled, but CES 2019 is just around the corner, so it isn’t far-fetched that Nvidia could use the major trade show as a launch vehicle for mobile Turing, and perhaps also the mid-range RTX 2060 for desktops/laptops.
