MSI Rolls out New G-Series Laptops

MSI is jumping on the Sandy Bridge bandwagon with a couple of new laptops in the manufacturer’s G series. Interestingly, the press release is labeling both the new GE620 and GR620 as “blazing performance gaming laptops” in spite of the fact that the GR620 only comes with Intel’s measly integrated graphics. Sure, the latest Intel IGP is better than the last one, but high-end gaming is totally out of the question.

The GE620 is slightly more interesting, thanks to an Nvidia GeForce GT 540M with 1GB of GDDR5 video RAM. It’s a solid mid-range GPU that will play any game at the 620’s native 1366×768 resolution.

On the other hand, MSI’s own GX660 and GT680 are both vastly more capable (and cool-looking) gaming laptops, so it strikes me as a bit odd that MSI decides to market the GE620 – not to mention the GR620 – as gaming laptops.

That’s not to say they are not good laptops. Their sleek design and low weight are particularly notable; 2.4kg/5.3lbs including the battery is less than the 15-inch MacBook Pro and therefore some of – if not the – lightest 15-inch laptops available.
