MSI (Re-)Releases New Gaming Laptops Including “Fastest Ever” GT680

msi gt680MSI has just issued a press release with some interesting news and some releases that we were already aware of, including the GX680 and the new G-series laptops.

The interesting part is that the Sandy Bridge-equipped GT680 is back, which MSI announced already ahead of CES but was delayed due to the mishaps with Intel’s latest platform.

What makes the GT680 so interesting is that MSI claims that it’s the “fastest laptop ever”–in laboratory tests no less. Besides a 2nd-gen Core i7 quad-core CPU, it comes with an Nvidia GTX 460M.

I personally have no issues with MSI’s gaming laptops; I’ve been a proud owner of one myself, but the “fastest ever” claim has me raising my unibrow in consternation.

MSI has a proprietary overclocking feature called Turbo Drive Engine, and with this feature running it produces a PCMark Vantage score of over 18,000. That is impressive, but can a single GTX 460M – overclocked or not – outperform the likes of Origin PC’s Eon 17 with dual GTX 485M GPUs in gaming? I respectfully but sincerely doubt it.

Still, there’s’ no question that the GT680 is a nice gaming machine and a serious competitor to its counterparts from Alienware and Asus. It will be interesting to see how it performs outside the laboratory.
