MSI has just taken the lid of a new version of its 15.6-inch GT6xx series–more specifically one GT683DX, which is more or less identical to the GT683R that was recently released, but with an Nvidia GTX 570M instead of a GTX 560M. The rest of the hardware consists of a 2nd-generation Intel Core i7-2630QM (quad core), four DDR3 memory slots for up to 16GB of RAM, dual hard drive (RAID 0) or SSD/hard drive setups and the Dynaudio / THX TruStudio Pro virtual surround sound system.
The most interesting part here is of course the brand new GeForce GTX 570M with 1.5GB GDDR5. This graphics card replaced the GTX 470M, which was barely used in any gaming laptops. As the name implies, the performance should lie somewhere in between the GTX 560M and Nvidia’s fastest card, the GTX 580M.
There are few (if any) reviews available for this card yet, but the specs are fairly revealing: it has 336 CUDA cores compared to 384 in the 580M and 192 in the 560M. There are however additional factors that play a part here, namely the memory bus, which is 192-bit in both the 570M and 560M, while it’s 256-bit in the 580M. In addition, the 560M has higher stock clock speeds.
On the other hand, there is little doubt that the GTX 570M is noticeably faster than the 560M. MSI says it represents a 20% performance improvement over the 560M and produces a 3DMark Vantage score of 12,475 points–also a significantly higher figure. Another important feature that carries over from MSI’s other gaming laptops (apart from the budget variant GE620DX) is TDE (Turbo Drive Engine) overclocking–a very neat feature that automatically overclocks both CPU and GPU with the push of a button.
It also has the somewhat less exciting Cooler Boost feature that provide extra cooling on demand but also increases the noise level. The keyboard on the GT683DX is also the same chiclet type as the one found on the other laptops in the series. Other features include a Full HD 16:9 wide screen (1920×1080), a HD (720p) webcam, an HDMI port and USB3.0.
