Dell has said nothing about this, but if you are looking for the M15x on the Alienware website it is suddenly nowhere to be found. Last I checked, the Canadian Dell website still had an M15x page up and running, but it wasn’t available for sale. Instead, visitors are pointed to the Alienware M14x.
Is this the end of the road for Dell’s 15-inch gaming laptop? It certainly looks that way. Either that, or Dell has an M15x R3 up their sleeves. Although that seems unlikely seeing as the next-gen Sandy Bridge M11x, M14x and M18x were just launched, while the 15-inch Alienware still clung to the previous generation Intel CPUs.
The M14x is certainly a nice alternative, but it is evidently too small to support the most powerful GPUs from Nvidia or AMD (even if the GT 555M comes close). That leaves a pretty big step between the 14″ model to the large desktop replacements, the M17x and M18x. We’ll just have to wait and see whether Dell intends to keep a 15-inch model in its Alienware lineup.
Meanwhile, the M15x is still available from Newegg and Amazon in both new and refurbished conditions, but the option to customize one and get it straight from the manufacturer has vanished–at least for the time being.
