Razer Blade Gets 240 Hz or 4K OLED Display Options

Razer is now updating its Blade devices with some new hardware options. Both the 15-inch and 17-inch Blade laptops are getting some updates.

The big news in the 15-inch Blade (Advanced model) is that the device can be equipped with either a 4K OLED panel or a 1080p panel with an exceptionally high refresh rate of 240Hz. These alternatives were actually announced at CES earlier this year, but at that point, the Blades with OLED/240Hz displays were only at the prototype stage. It was unclear if or when they would be added to the configuration available for sale. That time is apparently now, starting from April 24th 2019.

To get a Blade with the new 4K OLED panel, it’s not just the actual panel that will drive up the costs, however. It will only be available in combination with the fastest GPU option, meaning an Nvidia RTX 2080. The Blade 15’s 2160p OLED panel is a touchscreen with full DCI-P3 RGB color space coverage, a response time of just 1 ms response time, as well as HDR 400 True Black certification. According to Razer the 4K OLED display also comes with TUV certification for reduced blue-light output that should be less of a strain on the eyes during prolonged gaming sessions.

While the 240Hz display has one of the highest refresh rates on the market, it uses the standard 1080p/FHD resolution – a combination that should lead to a very smooth gaming experience. It has a matte finish and support for 100 % of the sRGB color space.

The slightly different Base model of the Razer Blade 15 will not have the same configuration options as its more expensive sibling, but it does get an upgrade in the GPU department. It will include a GeForce RTX 2060 instead of a GTX 1060. However, this will also result in a $400 price increase.

Processors Updated to Intel’s 9th-Gen Core

Other than the new panels, Razer’s laptops will now ship with Intel’s latest, 9th-generation Core CPUs. The ubiquitous Core i7-8750H is replaced with the new i7-9750H, which is similar but should offer somewhat better performance thanks to higher clock rates. The clock frequency ranges are up from 2.2–3.9 GHz (8750H) to 2.6–4.0 GHz (9750H) on multi-core loads, while the single-core boost clock has been increased from 4.3 GHz to 4.5 GHz in the new processor. The Blades also get added support for Wi-Fi 6 via a networking adapter with transfer rates all the way up to 2.4 Gbps.

New 17-Inch Blade Pro

The 17-inch Blade Pro, which hasn’t been updated in a while, also receives some love from Razer in the form of a new design. According to Razer, the new version is 25 % smaller thanks (in part) to its now-narrow 6 mm bezels. Like its 15-inch sister model, it will also be equipped with an Intel Core i7-9750H and some of the fastest graphics cards on the market, up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080. Due to the larger form factor, you also have additional storage options. The base model is equipped with 512GB of SSD storage and you can add an additional drive using the Blade Pro’s extra M.2 slot. There’s two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports on the new Blade Pro, one of which offers Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth.

Both the new Razer Blade 15 Advanced and Razer Blade Pro will be available shortly at prices starting from $1,999 and $2,499, respectively.
