Mobility Radeon HD 7000M Series Leaked

AMD’s GPU department – formerly known as ATI – has barely had time to release its latest Mobility Radeon 6000-series, but already (unconfirmed) details on the mobile HD 7000 series are appearing, although its release is a long way off.

According to the rumors, all of the new GPUs in the series – ranging from budget offerings to high-end gaming chips – will be built with an efficient 28nm production process. Furthermore it looks like AMD Fusion won’t be making it to the mobile segment.

The Mobility Radeon HD 7000M series go by the code names Thames, Chelsea, the Heathrow, and Wimbledon, in order of performance. In other words, Heathrow and Wimbledon are the most interesting new parts from a laptop gamer’s perspective.

Heathrow comes in either 128-bit or 192-bit versions and offer between 1.5GB and 2GB of GDDR5 – allegedly boosting performance by as much as 30 percent compared to the mid-range 6000M-series GPUs. Wimbledon will be the flagship product, with a 256-bit bus coupled with 2GB or 4GB of GDDR5, which is quoted as roughly 25 percent faster than the (not yet launched) high-end 6000M-series GPU.

However, if you plan on waiting for the 7000M series, you will need a great deal of patience. The high-end Wimbledon GPU won’t be out until sometime next year – as in 2012.
