Ivy Bridge Launch Dates Confirmed

There has been much talk back and forth about delays with Intel’s next-gen Ivy Bridge platform, but now it looks like things have started to settle, with some launch dates confirmed. Fortunately, the quad-core mobile parts that are destined for gaming laptops will be among the first to arrive, together with other desktop quad-core processors. These chips are scheduled for April 29.

It’s worth noting that there are some discrepancies with this list compared to some of the models that have been mentioned previously, such as in the specs for the new HP Pavilion laptops. Either Intel has removed some processors from the lineup or the list is incomplete.

In any event, the laptop CPUs include a Core i7-3720QM clocked at 2.6GHz (3.6GHz with Turbo Boost), Core i7-3820QM clocked at 2.7GHz (3.7GHz with Turbo Boost) and finally the Core i7-3920XM, the Extreme Edition running at 2.9GHz or 3.8GHz with Turbo Boost. As usual, the Extreme Edition CPU is unlocked and overclockable, and also prohibitively expensive.

As for the dual-core Core i5 (and some Core i7) models, these will have to wait until June 3, which is no doubt a major disappointment for everyone who has been looking forward to an Ivy Bridge-based ultrabook–or perhaps even a gaming ultrabook. The still cheaper Core i3 CPUs will not be available until the 3rd quarter.
