Asus G75/G55 Gets GeForce GTX 670M

The next-gen Republic of Gamers laptops from Asus are scheduled to arrive in April, equipped with Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge CPUs and a still mysterious Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M.

This is not a surprising update in the least, as many notebook manufacturers are no doubt preparing new designs and hardware updates to Ivy Bridge as well as new 28nm mobile graphics solutions from either AMD or Nvidia.

These laptops were on display at CES but it’s NotebookItalia that has managed to get some good footage. Design-wise, there seems to be few changes over the laptop’s they will be replacing–the G74SX and G53SX–but a slightly slimmer frame including a less bottom-heavy construction can possibly be detected, as well as a slight indent along the lid.

The low-key “stealth bomber” design is still appealing, so there are few reasons to change a successful concept. One area where improvements would have been welcome is the weight–particularly for the 15.6-inch G53SX, which is as heavy as some 17-inch laptops. Unfortunately the changes are marginal if the Italian website’s numbers are correct: 4.3 kg (9.5 lbs) and 3.8 kg (8.4 lbs) for the 17-inch and 15-inch versions, respectively.

However, the most important changes will be on the inside, where ASUS will replace the current 500M-series GPUs from Nvidia with the new, true 28nm solution Kepler. How Kepler performs is still unknown because it’s a brand new architecture, but the GTX 670M should come out well above the current GTX 560M that is used in countless gaming laptops.

NotebookItalia also points out that there will be SSD options for the G75/G55 lineup, including dual-drive combos and SSDs up to 256 GB. Up to 16 GB of 1600 MHz RAM is also supported (the current Sandy Bridge platform is limited to 8 GB of 1600MHz DDR3–add more and it will be downclocked).

Perhaps you have them confused with the 40nm “fake” HD 7000M and GT 600M parts? e.g. the 635M and HD 7690M.

  5. Sadly, but laptop gpu will not be 28nm kernel. It’ll old 40nm technology, sligthly boosted, that’s all

  6. Hooooooot. I’ve been waiting to replace my G72GX, Core 2 Duo. It had a good life, but it’s definitely showing its age.
